What is an Occupational Therapy Assistant? The Role of a COTA

Occupational therapy assistants work directly alongside occupational therapists to help patients of all ages build, recover, or maintain the skills they need for daily living. Under the direction of a licensed OT, COTAs carry out treatment plans, guide patients through therapeutic activities, and track progress session to session, often spending more one-on-one time with patients than any other member of the care team. Whether the setting is a school, hospital, rehab center, or long-term care facility, OTAs play a hands-on role in helping patients regain independence and participate fully in work, school, home, and community life.
