Maternal Mental Health: Training for the Whole Arc of Motherhood

Mothers aren't only vulnerable in the twelve weeks after birth. Identity shifts, invisible labor, unrecognized ADHD, and rage that shows up out of nowhere can surface anywhere from the first positive pregnancy test to years into parenting. PESI's maternal mental health training equips you to recognize, assess, and treat the full emotional spectrum of motherhood, not just the postpartum window.

What Is Maternal Mental Health?

Maternal mental health is bigger than postpartum depression and anxiety. It spans matrescence, the psychological and neurobiological transition into motherhood, along with identity loss, chronic overstimulation, unrecognized executive dysfunction, and the slow accumulation of invisible labor that so often gets mislabeled as "just stress."

Clinicians trained only in traditional postpartum models can miss this. A mother presenting with irritability and forgetfulness three years postpartum may not be depressed; she may be dealing with undiagnosed maternal ADHD. A client describing sudden, frightening anger may not need anger management; she needs a trauma-informed understanding of mom rage as a nervous system response, not a character flaw.

PESI's maternal mental health training gives you a framework built for that complexity: evidence-based, identity-affirming, and designed to help you meet mothers wherever they are, not just the chapter right after delivery.

Expert Voices

Learn from clinicians who specialize in the parts of maternal mental health that traditional training leaves out.

Danielle Gordon, LMHC, LPC, NCC, PMH-C, is a certified perinatal mental health specialist and reproductive mental health specialist who built her practice around the gaps she saw in her own care. She has trained hospital staff and corporate audiences on perinatal mental health, served on the board of Postpartum Support International's Michigan chapter, and is a Brown University ROSE-certified instructor. Her training moves past the postpartum-only model to address maternal ADHD, mom rage, and trauma held in the body across the full maternal lifespan.
