Why Knee Rehab Demands a Specialist's Eye
The knee sits between the hip and the ankle, which means it often pays the price for problems that start somewhere else. Patellofemoral pain can trace back to hip control. A persistent limp after ACL reconstruction can be as much about quadriceps inhibition and fear of reinjury as it is about the graft. Knee osteoarthritis rarely responds to a single intervention in isolation. Effective knee rehab asks you to look up and down the kinetic chain, test what matters, and progress load at the right pace for the tissue in front of you.
The stakes are high on both ends of the lifespan. Young athletes returning too early after ligament injury face a real risk of reinjury, while older adults with degenerative knee changes need rehab that preserves mobility and independence, whether they're heading toward surgery or working to avoid it.
What Knee Rehab Training Covers
PESI's knee rehab courses help physical therapists, PTAs, occupational therapists, OTAs, and athletic trainers sharpen their approach across the full continuum of knee care. You'll find training on functional testing and objective return-to-sport criteria after ACL injury and reconstruction, assessment and treatment of anterior knee pain, including patellofemoral pain and patellar tendinopathy, non-operative management of knee osteoarthritis, including resistance training and current evidence on injections and biologics, gait analysis and correction for knee flexion and loading deviations, and emerging tools such as blood flow restriction training, therapeutic taping and myofascial techniques.
Working with patients after total knee arthroplasty? Our Joint Replacement & Rehab Training page brings together PESI's full collection of courses on TKA, THA, and shoulder arthroplasty rehab.
Learn from Clinicians Who Treat the Knee Every Day
Dr. O'Halloran is a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association with more than 30 years in orthopedics and over 1,300 presentations delivered nationally and internationally. His investigational work on earlier gait facilitation in total knee arthroplasty patients has been cited in peer-reviewed literature, and he was named Clinician of the Year by the North Carolina Physical Therapy Association. His teaching centers on what to do when post-op patients stall and how to get them back to the activities that matter to them.
George Davies, DPT, MEd, PT, SCS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, PES, CES, CSMS, FAPTA
Dr. Davies brings the sports clinician's lens to knee rehab, with a focus on one of the hardest calls in the field: deciding when a patient is truly ready to return to activity. His functional testing algorithm gives clinicians a structured checklist for assessing the injured knee, moving from traditional tests to functional ones, and making return-to-sport decisions after ACL reconstruction with confidence.
Dr. Lau teaches clinicians how to program blood flow restriction training for patients across the spectrum, from young post-op ACL patients to older adults with knee osteoarthritis and TKA. His sessions cover the physiology behind BFR, safety screening and cuff placement, and how to match protocols to each patient's goals so you can build strength while protecting healing tissue.
