Changing Thoughts: Interventions for Anxious Thoughts

Knowing how to respond to our clients’ anxious thoughts in the moment can leave us feeling stuck. Anxiety expert Ashley Smith, PhD provides four key interventions to start helping our clients change the way they’re thinking and begin to quell their anxious thoughts.

4 Key Interventions for Anxious Thoughts

  • Flip It: Balance negativity or complaints by finding a positive aspect of this moment.
  • Be a Good Coach/Cheerleader: Coping thoughts of self-talk designed to boost motivation, courage, hope, and confidence in coping ability.
  • Spin It: Reframe the situation, see it from a different angle.
  • Find 3 Alternatives: Designed to expand thinking, which can help shift mental/emotional state. Find 3 alternative explanations. They don’t have to be believable.
In general, these are prefrontal cortex strategies designed to change inaccurate, unhelpful thoughts into rational, helpful ones. With all these techniques, remember that the goal is for the client to generate new thoughts, not for you to supply them with new thoughts.

Dr. Ashley Smith is a licensed clinical psychologist and recognized expert in anxiety and related disorders. She has worked in children’s hospitals, an anxiety specialty clinic, and private practice, providing evidence-based treatment for anxiety and OCD.

An adjunct faculty member at Kansas City University, Dr. Ashley has extensive experience training and supervising mental health professionals. She has authored peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and two books, including Childhood Anxiety Disorders. A long-time member of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, she was honored with their Special Recognition Award in 2023.

She regularly presents workshops and trainings at local and national levels, focusing on the practical application of cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, and applied neuroscience to improve clinical outcomes. She is also the co-founder of Peak Mind. The Center for Psychological Strength, an organization dedicated to making psychological tools more widely accessible.
