Description

The “core” is one of the most misunderstood terms in therapy, medicine, and athletics.  Even advanced clinicians limit their understanding of the core by using definitions based on anatomical geography. Re-defining and better understanding the core with a functional emphasis using neglected principles of stability and mobility opens the power of clinical outcomes and a resurgence of understanding.  This course will specifically re-define the core emphasizing function and individual patient analysis.  In addition, standardized assessments and activities/exercises utilizing the newly defined core will allow for immediate clinical impact and improved methods for treating the core for all patient abilities.

Objectives

  1. Investigate missing components of broadly used definitions of the core and how this leads to clinical misunderstanding and lack of evidence when treating core dysfunction.
  2. Develop a functional emphasis for core function using transverse, sagittal, and frontal planes with stability and mobility.
  3. Apply standardized evaluations used to evaluate core weakness and stability.
  4. Devise evidence-based core activities and exercises emphasizing the re-defined core that promote stability and mobility in supine, seated, and standing.
