Jennifer Lockman, PhD
Dr. Jennifer D. Lockman earned her BS in Psychology and MS in Professional Counseling from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University. She completed her psychology internship at the University of Rochester Medical Center and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the VISN 2 Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention in Canandaigua, NY. Dr. Lockman previously served as the CEO/Chief Science Officer for Centerstone, a large nonprofit community mental health organization. Dr. Lockman has overseen the program evaluation for more than eight SAMHSA suicide prevention grants, and has participated in national and international workgroups in suicide prevention (e.g., International Zero Suicide Leadership Exchange; Zero Suicide Data Panel; Invited Testimony before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions – HELP – Committee, 2022). Dr. Lockman joined the UAB faculty as an assistant professor in 2023. Dr. Lockman’s program of research focuses on understanding how people recover from suicide crisis events, including developing and testing novel, brief, recovery-focused psychotherapy interventions. She also researches how brief interventions can be deployed and scaled in real-world healthcare systems through novel training and implementation strategies. Dr. Lockman uses community-based participatory action research strategies to ensure individuals with Lived Experiences of Suicide and Crisis/Healthcare Leaders are included in the development of novel approaches to help suicidal persons recover and thrive.
