Jim maintains active status at Bryn Mawr as a research professor. He is a recipient of Bryn Mawr College’s McPherson Fellowship for excellence in teaching, research, and service. He was the 2014 recipient of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Work Practice, and he received the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award from Boston College’s School of Social Work.

A retired Colonel in the Army Medical Department, Jim’s twenty-four-year distinguished military career included a wide array of clinical, research, as well as senior program management (command) and policy assignments. In both his military and academic careers, Jim has brought attention to the duty and military life demands confronting members of our Armed Forces and their families, and he has been tireless in his efforts to promote solutions to the many challenges associated with military service and military family life. Most recently, Jim has been a co-collaborator for an ongoing bi-weekly Ukrainian seminar series for mental health providers focused on the many challenges providing mental health care in a wartime environment.

In 2016, the National Association of Social Workers Foundation recognized Jim as a social work pioneer. “Pioneers” are described as “social workers who have explored new territories and built outposts for human services on many frontiers… having made important contributions to the social work profession and to social policies through service, teaching, writing, research, program development, administration, or legislation.” Jim resides on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where he enjoys the many opportunities provided by life on the Chesapeake Bay.
