Description

Healthcare providers caring for people with serious illness may witness moments of patient suffering and distress, leading to various emotions. Natural experiences of sadness, frustration, grief, guilt, or isolation can occur. One pathway to mitigate the distress is through social support, which can come in the form of end-of-life debriefings.

Peer facilitated debriefings offer intentional time for the healthcare team to talk about the impact of their, a key factor in maintain meaning and purpose. This evidence-based strategy normalizes, validates and supports individuals throughout their work and career. This in turn can directly impact the supportive culture and coping strategies of a group, unit, or institution.

This presentation will review the strong evidence that supports debriefing programs and highlight the impact these have on staff attrition. Evidence suggest that having opportunities to increase collegial support and affirmation, along with learning coping strategies can significantly impact moral distress and improve patient care. Vickie Leff, LCSW, APHSW-C, will discuss the expectable consequences of working in healthcare, the use of self-reflection in understanding our reactions, and how ongoing debriefings seek to support clinical staff throughout their careers.

Vickie Leff, LCSW, APHSW-C, is a palliative care consultant and an adjunct instructor at the UNC School of Social Work, Chapel Hill. With over thirty-five years of clinical practice experience in oncology, palliative care, and hospice, Vickie presents on topics such as moral distress and resilience to national educational organizations and institutions. Recently she served as the executive director of SWHPN and prior to that as the executive director of the Advanced Palliative Care & Hospice Social Work Certification (APHSW) board, an organization which oversees the implementation and administration of this evidence-based certification. Vickie’s work has been published in Health Affairs, the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (JPSM), Journal of Palliative Medicine and other journals with a focus on moral distress and resilience. She is on the editorial board of Social Work in Health Care Journal and a member of the Board of Directors for the Center for Practical Bioethics. She is an editor of the book Mirrors & Windows: Reflections of the Journey in Serious Illness Practice and co-author of Helping Children Cope when Someone they Love has a Serious Illness.
