This workshop will help Nurse Practitioners communicate effectively in basic Spanish phrases. Participants will gain a primary understanding of the Spanish language, an overview of Spanish speaking cultures and an introduction to basic pronunciation, the alphabet, grammar, and vocabulary for conversational Spanish. Participants will be able to verbalize basic Spanish greetings, perform a basic health assessment, and speak in conversational medical phrases.

Dr. Long is a critical care clinical instructor, a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, has developed diabetes education programs and teaches a diabetes educator certification course. She has a passion for active learning and is an international speaker and award-winning educator.

Objectives

  1. Examine general cultural and language considerations for Spanish speaking patients. 
  2. Identify basic Spanish words and expressions related to healthcare situations. 
  3. Identify basic Spanish phrases needed to communicate with Spanish speaking patients in your role as a health care provider. 
  4. Determine resources available for health care providers to learn Spanish phrases and resources for non-English speaking patients to receive translated medical information. 
  5. Formulate a basic health screening and physical assessment in Spanish. 
  6. Use simple Spanish phrases to explain diagnostic test results, medications, and treatments. 
  7. Examine how to use a translator effectively.

3. Components of learning a foreign language 
a. Guidelines to learning a 2nd language: learn parts of speech/language, listen/train your ear, practice and speak
b. Parts of language: vocab, grammar, pronunciation, comprehension, fluency
c. Simple steps to learn a foreign language
4. Cultural Considerations
    a. Gender/machismo

    c. Attitudes of health and illness
    d. Religion and values, demonstration of affection, family

5. Practice scenario: common health conditions and illnesses
6. Dicho: El remedio puede ser peor que la enfermedad.
    Sometimes the remedy is worse than the disease.

Lecture 3- Assessing Patients
1. Greeting: Yo soy_______.
2. Vocab: parts of the body
3. Grammar: Pronouns, Verbs AR, ER and IR, expressing a negative
4. Dialog: Creating the either/or questioning approach
5. Scenario: Stimulating the yes/no answers, ER visit
6. Dicho: Hacer de tripas corazón.
    What can't be cured must be endured.

Lecture 4    
1. Greeting/question to partner “Que trabajo hace?”
2. Vocab: family
3. Grammar-Irregular verbs IR: Tener, querer, ir

6. Saying/Dicho: El que algo quiere, algo le cuesta.
    He that would have the fruit must climb the tree.
7. Cultural insight of a country-El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua

Lecture 5     
1. Greeting/question to partner “Quien es en su familia?”
2. Vocab: food, medications
3. Grammar- prefixes/suffixes, possessives, verbs Ser and Estar
4. Dialog practice: medications, remedies, typical medical scenarios
5. Practice scenario-Cardiovascular system and respiratory scenario
6.  Saying/Dicho: Dime con quien andas, y te dire quien eres.
     You can judge a man by the company he keeps.
7. Cultural insight of a country-Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia

Lecture 6     
1. Greeting/question to partner “Que es su pasatiempo?” 
2. Vocab- directions, medical tests, equipment and settings
3. Grammar- verb forms
4. Dialog practice: diagnostic tests
5. Practice scenario-GI, GU and MS vocabulary
6 Saying/Dicho: Persevera y triunfaras.
   If at first you don't succeed, try, and then try again.
7. Cultural insight of a country-Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay Peru

Lecture 7

2. Vocab- time, days of week, months of year, seasons

4. Dialog: giving a diagnosis, medical equipment, specialists
5. Practice scenario-Reproductive system & mental health
6. Saying/Dicho: Paga lo que debes, sanaras del mal que tienes
    Pay your debts and that will cure your disease.
7. Cultural insight of a country-Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina
