Hurdles keeping you stuck
- The Conditioning of Diet Culture: Clients who are stuck in the bargaining phase of grief because they are continually gaslighting themselves about what Diet Culture is teaching verses what aligns with their values
- Skills: Deprogramming by highlighting a client value system and comparing and contrasting the dichotomy of a client's thoughts vs belief
- “Bad Body Image” a.k.a Body Image Distress: Preventing clients from body acceptance is distressful to body image
- Body Acceptance
Tools to shift body grief
- The Conditioning of Diet Culture: Understanding a client's enneagram, their core motivation is I can help understand better how they relate to the world and showcase the dissonance of the beliefs they identify with vs the actions they are living by.
- “Bad Body Image” a.k.a Body Image Distress: Exploring the distress in a trauma-informed way (utilizing DBT skills of scaling the level of distress in an effort to protect the client's nervous system as we explore traumatic body image
- Tool #2: Utilizing a narrative therapy technique to understand the underlying story or narrative that this distress is communicating
- Tool #3: 1. Investigate where am I feeling this in my body 2. Manage how distressful is it 3. Honor the suck without trying to rush the reframe 4. Assessing your needs in the moment
Body Acceptance:
- 1. For understanding body grief, my unique formula is first building awareness around the negative distressful body image in a trauma-informed way
- 2. We need to practice active unlearning: I would do this by creating and setting attainable body image goals with my clients so we can provide them with a short-term win
- 3. Overtime: not conflating that time will heal old wounds but rather in time time with the practice of building awareness and active unlearning our clients will have concrete evidence of how their formerly unmanageable distress has become more manageable
- 4. In community: Helping clients take their private healing into the world in everyday situations creates a microcosm for their healing. It allows them to build their self-efficacy, resiliency, and compassion a.k.a. their values in how they would respond to others who struggle with the same wounds.
