A Yoga Practice for Children with ADHD

Sometimes children with ADHD just can't stop moving...

Their sympathetic nervous system is engaged, flooding their body with adrenaline — making their body want to move, and making them feel edgy, and sometimes even aggressive.

Here's a quick and enjoyable strategy to help the adrenaline dissipate throughout the body and restore attention and focus.

This is a useful technique and I have used this with adults with anxiety disorders as well. However, when working with any children, more specifically ADHD: it is helpful to have more clearly defined direction with arm and breathe movements. These children actually like directions and more importantly , want to get it "right" (self esteem). With ADHD children it could become a "runaway train", without more directions on the "method", which is needed to be effective. Brief example based on what the presenter was doing: State that there is not a right or wrong way. To reduce the stigma of not listening or making mistakes. "However to "feel your best", you can count in your head (or leader count with them) try this". Explain the terminology to them of repetitions (simple) to accelerate and decelerate ) Accelerate: one set slow, one set medium, one set fast. Then decelerate: one set medium , one set slow and relax...breathe and rest (timed) and repeat the rotation. OR process with the children, how did it "feel" to do this? What did you like , not like? Feedback to the presenter on presenting: Jennifer your liked wonderful and a coming voice. However, you might present more effectively if hair were tied up, instead be preoccupied with it (a few times) & in you face , while speaking. Keep Breathing !

Pretty nice! I'll try this with some of the kids I see and pass this tip along to the other clinicians I work with as well as with a classroom teacher I've been consulting with
