Course Description:

Do you know the clear connection between sensory processing issues and their direct impact on ASD, ADHD and Anxiety?

Mim Ochsenbein, MSW, OTR/L, will show you how to apply the sensory processing approach to psychotherapy for optimal results with children & adolescents.

Sensory processing is a key element of your client’s ability to function in daily life. In this seminar you’ll learn the sensory-based gaps found in the mental health treatment of children and adolescents with ASD, ADHD and Anxiety disorders, and how to treat them.

Mim will use her unique and specialized skill set (as a social worker and an occupational therapist), to show you (as mental health clinicians) new and effective tools to address self-regulation, relationship development and executive functioning. You will be able to identify and immediately implement key sensory changes to:
  • Enhance therapeutic interactions
  • Improve regulation across environments
  • Increase organization and successful completion of tasks
  • Attain optimal arousal for increased engagement in the therapeutic process

Through case examples, videos, interactive opportunities, role play, and small group collaborations, you will walk away with a new and clear connection between these conditions (ASD, ADHD and anxiety) and sensory processing deficits! Integrating these simple and effective sensory-based strategies immediately into your mental health practice will increase results and improve your client outcomes!
Objectives:
  1. Assess and describe key sensory issues in children and adolescents with DSM-5® diagnoses that impact their day-to-day functioning.
  2. Summarize principles of sensory processing related to attachment and how they overlap.
  3. Recognize symptoms of ASD, ADHD, and Anxiety disorders that can be addressed using sensory strategies/techniques.
  4. Explain how sensory processing techniques/strategies can improve self-regulation skills in children and adolescents with ASD, ADHD, and Anxiety disorders.
  5. Design and implement strategies for improving organization of self in a child with ADHD or ASD.
  6. Discuss strategies to increase communication between a child and therapist during “talk therapy”.

MIRIAM OCHSENBEIN, MSW, OTR/L

Mim Ochsenbein, MSW, OTR/L, has been practicing pediatric occupational therapy for the past 18 years. Her OT practice has included early intervention, school-based, clinic-based, in-home and residential settings. She specializes in sensory processing issues, autism, and twice exceptional children. Recently, she has married her occupational therapy experience and masters of social welfare degree by developing programs for non-profit organizations that provide both mental health and rehabilitation services for children and adolescents. Mim has also taught Pediatric OT Theory and Adolescent Conditions in Mental Health in the MSOT program at California State University – Dominguez Hills. She is certified through Western Psychological Services for instruction and administration of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test.
