Course Description:
Attend this one-day program and gain a practical approach to the assessment and treatment of orthopedic injuries in the youth athlete. You will learn the unique injury risk factors that young athletes face as they compete in their respective sports, and be provided with an in-depth review of the injuries they most commonly suffer. Joint preservation concerns in the lower extremity, and the effects that proximal and distal influences contribute to disorders of the knee and lower quarter, especially as they pertain to the female athlete, will be highlighted. Special considerations in the overhead athlete, including the role of research in rule changes in Little League Baseball, will also be discussed. Each topic presented will provide rehabilitative interventions that address the indicated injury, including effective, cutting-edge assessment and treatment strategies.
Learner Objectives:

  1. Identify the most common risk factors associated with youth sports injuries.
  2. Identify the most common overuse injuries of the shoulder and elbow in overhead athletes.
  3. Discuss the latest research related to patella-femoral disorders, including the influence of proximal and distal factors, and the role of orthotic/brace prescription.
  4. List treatment and rehabilitation options for Ulnar Collateral Ligament sprains.
  5. Discuss the growing concern of articular cartilage damage/injury of the knee in youth athletes, and the importance of joint protection strategies during functional rehabilitation of the lower extremity.
  6. Discuss the proximal influences on injuries and disorders of the knee in female youth athletes.
