Course Description:

Safe, quality health care delivery and payment for that health care has become increasingly focused on medical record documentation which substantiates the quality of care given and the provider’s right to be paid for that care. Documentation continues to meet its traditional role to support nursing actions in defense against malpractice claims, licensure actions, meet facility accreditation requirements and regulatory compliance.

The nurse’s role in documentation is paramount in meeting all of these goals.

This one-day session will provide essential tools for navigating these emerging documentation issues and arm you with an understanding of why and how proper documentation is crucial to protecting your professional reputation, license and job!

Objectives:
  1. Describe how nursing documentation and nursing care contributes to enhanced reimbursement for facilities.
  2. Discuss how proper documentation helps to achieve regulatory, accreditation and licensure compliance.
  3. Explain the multiple purposes of the medical record.
  4. Explain how to meet legal and professional nursing standards when documenting.
  5. Discuss the EMR and its implications for nursing documentation.
  6. Outline the elements of a malpractice claim.
  7. Identify how the medical record can serve as the nurse’s best defense.
  8. Describe several situations under which the State Board may bring a nurse licensure action.
