JONATHAN P TOMES, ATTORNEY AT LAW

Jonathan P. Tomes, J.D., is a health care attorney practicing in the greater Kansas City area as a Partner in the law firm of Tomes & Dvorak. He has served as an Associate Professor of Law with the IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and as a military judge in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps. Before becoming a military lawyer, Mr. Tomes learned about security systems in the Military Intelligence branch of the Army. He is the author of more than 50 books, including, most recently, The Compliance Guide to HIPAA and the DHHS Regulations, now in its 5th edition, and its accompanying HIPAA Documents Resource Center CD, also in its 5th edition; Electronic Health Records: A Practical Compliance Guide, now in its 3rd edition; Medical Records Retention Guide (with coauthors Michael I. Spak and Richard D. Dvorak), now in its 4th edition; Basic HIPAA Training Workbook with accompanying DVD, now in its 5th edition; and his new book, How to Handle HIPAA and HITECH Act Breaches, Complaints, and Investigations: Everything You Need to Know, all available from Veterans Press, www.veteranspress.com. His next book, Mental and Behavioral Health and HIPAA: An Uneasy Alliance, will be out this spring. Additionally, he has published articles in such professional journals as Journal of Health Care Compliance, CCH Health Care Compliance Letter, Journal of Healthcare Finance, Healthcare Data Management, and most recently, Journal of AHIMA.

Recently, he has been an expert witness in litigation involving health information compliance issues in Illinois and Colorado. Mr. Tomes is a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeal for the 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and Federal Circuits, and Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma, including their respective federal courts. He is also the President of EMR Legal, Inc., a national HIPAA consulting firm, and is uniquely qualified to teach how to comply with HIPAA, the regulations implementing it, and the changes that the HITECH ACT requires regarding HIPAA. His knowledge of the law and of the practical aspects of setting up a HIPAA compliance program provides a rare opportunity for veterans and novices alike.
