Dear Clinicians and helping professionals,

My first internship was working in a co-occurring mental health and addiction treatment program.

The rules were strict… if a client broke the abstinence-only policy, they were kicked out.

The policy seemed to make the program more of a revolving door than a place where clients could recover.

It was years later, working in community mental health, that I discovered harm reduction psychotherapy. It just made sense for how clients live

Reality is, people with a shopping addiction have to buy groceries. Harm reduction offered me the principles and techniques to meet my clients where they were at — living in the real world!

Whether it was clients struggling with obsessive behaviors, doomscrolling, using pornography, or even those with substance abuse issues, I finally had a path forward that didn't punish clients for trying their best.

That's why we've created this certificate course — to share the core principles and skills of harm reduction psychotherapy with the broader mental health community.

You'll join Kristin Dempsey, Ali Hall, and Jennifer Patternson, three leading voices in integrating ACT, MI, and strengths-based approaches to harm reduction recovery. Discover…

  • Realistic, individualized goals ranging from full abstinence to safer practices or reduced frequency.
  • Key principles from Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing help you build on client strengths.
  • Tools to help clients struggling with obsessive and compulsive behaviors make changes.
  • Relapse prevention strategies that embrace purpose-driven living.

BONUS: You get a six-hour training on disordered drinking, completely free, and available immediately when you register!

PLUS, you'll get a downloadable digital badge and displayable certificate of completion.

Harm reduction isn't a compromise, last resort, or just a trend — it's a modern best practice. Enroll now.

Sincerely,
Sarah Mount, LPC

Frequently Asked Questions

Harm reduction isn't just about addiction treatment anymore. It's a movement reshaping mental health, trauma recovery, and behavioral health across the board. From substance use to self-harm, eating disorders, and high-risk coping behaviors, harm reduction offers a practical, compassionate approach that meets clients where they are today. Many therapists, addiction professionals, coaches, and more find that harm reduction helps them to better serve their clients by creating more realistic, value-driven, and individualized goals.

Many clinicians already do use harm reduction principles in practice. It's always about staying within your scope of practice and ensuring you're in compliance with your licensure board and code of ethics. Harm reduction is an approach that builds trust, supports safety, and respects client autonomy — all while being evidence-based, client-centered, and trauma-informed. Incorporating harm reduction doesn't compromise your ethical responsibilities; it strengthens your ability to meet clients where they are and support meaningful, sustainable healing.

A certificate is a document issued upon the completion of a training program. It signifies that you have trained on specific skills, have trained with a particular individual, or have acquired knowledge in a particular subject.

Certification, on the other hand, often requires you to meet specific standards, pass rigorous exams, and many even include additional practice, consultation, supervision, evaluations, and ongoing continuing education requirements. While you will need to pass an exam, this course does not include many of these elements, making this a "certificate" program.

This certificate does distinguish you as a professional who has trained more extensively in the area of Harm Reduction with experts… and it's an acknowledgment that can set you apart in the eyes of clients and peers.
