Description

  • Empower clients by applying skills when and where they need
  • Real-world/real-time behavioral change through consultation to the client
  • Balance change strategies with risk management strategies in a high-risk population

Skills coaching is a core component of conducting Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Making DBT fit into your life as a clinician can be one of the most difficult things for new and experienced clinicians alike. Skills coaching in DBT can be misunderstood and misapplied, resulting in poor outcomes for clients, and burnout for therapists. This workshop will empower you to use skills coaching by teaching different strategies that work across multiple settings and populations.

With an unflinching emphasis on adherence to the DBT model, Dr. Patrick Kerr will help you learn and practice implementing the necessary components of skills coaching, assessing and managing suicide risk during coaching calls, and using dialectical and stylistic strategies to optimize skills coaching. Learn and practice strategies for preventing burnout by observing your limits with clients, and for maximizing treatment effects by making contingency management a part of skills coaching calls. Find out how to adapt skills coaching protocols to stay adherent to DBT, while making this part of treatment work for your clients in your organization.

Using case material, demonstrations, and role plays- along with plenty of humor, irreverence, and compassion- this seminar will take you step-by-step through the ins, outs, ups, and downs of skills coaching. You will walk away with a thorough understanding of how to use this pillar of comprehensive DBT.
