Whether it was the Los Angeles Riots twenty-two years ago, the marathon bombing in Boston, the numerous school shootings across the country or the Ferguson uprising, communities are being impacted by traumatic events that have broad consequences for its residents. Not only are residents impacted individually but the overall community’s world view changes as well making it difficult for everyday community functioning to work as it once did.
More and more clinicians are being asked to navigate community trauma. Without tools, strategies and skills to manage community trauma what is a clinician to do? Future traumatic events are impossible to predict but they seem to be occurring at an alarming rate. How prepared are you or is your community?
It can be intimidating and challenging to recognize the depth and breadth of the trauma faced by community members and to help communities rebuild their trust and structure. This type of rapid change requires strengths based approaches that feature practical know how and definitive strategies. Highlighted in this presentation are eight strategies for building community resilience following traumatic events. Dr. McGhee provides practical skills to use in any community no matter where your practice or population.
