Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD's) are considered to be some of the most complex conditions to treat. Not only do these clients struggle with social limitations and school/work issues, but clinicians often must also help them with comorbid conditions such as problems with emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, OCPD, scrupulosity, learning disabilities, Tourettic OCD, or a combination of two or more of the above. This might seem overwhelming, but before you run away from these clients, remember that they try very hard to be as "normal" as possible, and that they will greatly appreciate your efforts to understand them and to try to help make their lives easier. Plus, as clinicians we really can make a difference in their lives! In this workshop the presenter will offer some background and an overview on the demographics and current thinking about the diagnosis and etiology of high functioning autism, including a brief discussion on the change in terminology of what used to be called "Asperger's Syndrome." Since ASD's are developmental conditions, the ways in which the approach is adjusted–depending on whether one is working with children, adolescents, or adults–will be described. There will be an emphasis on tailoring the treatment approach to the individual. The main part of the workshop will include detailed descriptions of CBT and other evidence-based clinical interventions, as well as the latest efforts to find effect medications that can help these clients fulfill their potential. Case examples will be given, as well as information about insurance issues, government benefits, and access to community resources. In addition, members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions about their own cases.
