WILLIAM J HEAPHY JR, JD

William J. Heaphy, JR, JD, is a deputy chief assistant to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in charge of diversion and other programs offering alternatives to incarceration. As director of the Behavioral Health/Expedited Plea Program, he manages the state’s largest and most ambitious “jail diversion” program; reviews cases involving non-violent, mentally ill jail inmates; advises the court, trial prosecutors, and defense attorneys; and  arranges for treatment in the community mental health system instead of incarceration. Mr. Heaphy is a founding member of the Mental Health Court Committee; the director of Pre-Trial Diversion program; and a team member of the Third Circuit Adult Drug Court. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Honors English and from the University of Michigan Law School.
