Self-Regulation Interventions for Children & Adolescents

“Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” - Albert Einstein

The kids we worry about - the ones who won't sit still, who melt down, who hit first and ask questions later - they're fish trying to climb trees. And our job is to figure out who belongs in the water and who belongs in the trees, then help them get there.

That's what this training is about.

I take a different approach than most self-regulation seminars. I'm not going to spend our time together teaching techniques for helping kids calm down in the moment. Those are valuable, and plenty of people teach them well.

Instead, I want to help you understand: What made them dysregulated in the first place?

Because here's what I've learned in 25+ years of working with kids who have ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences, and learning disabilities: if we solve the problem that created the dysregulation, people will be more regulated. It's that simple.

I know you're overwhelmed. Teachers have impossible class sizes. Clinicians have impossible caseloads. I'm not here to add more to your plate without giving you something back. Think of this as an investment: time spent understanding what causes problems means less time spent managing problems that keep repeating.

I'd love to have you join me.

Warmly,

Dr. Laura Ehlert, PsyD

You Know This Child

The one who won't sit still. Doesn't follow directions. Throws tantrums. Has difficulty waiting for their turn. They may "hit first and ask questions later." They react impulsively and have difficulty expressing what they need or what is frustrating them.

We know this child is intelligent, caring and kind - but their behavior doesn't reflect these positive qualities. These are the children who confuse and frustrate parents and overwhelm teachers and peers. They struggle to meet basic expectations and are unable to succeed in school, with peers and at home.

Join clinical psychologist Dr. Ehlert and learn to effectively intervene with the emotional and behavioral dysregulation of children with High-Functioning Autism, ADHD, Learning Disabilities and Sensory Processing Disorders. Through hands-on activities and dynamic discussion, you will learn techniques, behavioral strategies, problem-solving strategies and brain training exercises to:

  • Address the sensory, language and executive functioning processing deficits that trigger them
  • Increase their self-control, social success, emotional control and task completion
  • Teach flexibility, tolerance, thinking it through and decision-making
  • Reduce the frequency and duration of their tantrums and emotional outbursts

Walk away with proven emotional, behavioral and processing strategies that lead to social and academic success.

What if the "defiant" child in front of you isn't defiant at all?

What looks like defiance might actually be a child who literally cannot put their experience into words.

In this training, you'll learn to see what others miss:

  • Why developmental language disorders often look like ADHD, oppositional behavior, or "attitude problems"
  • How to become the person who can finally explain to parents and teachers what this child is actually experiencing
  • Strategies specific enough to use in your next session, your next IEP meeting, your next parent consultation
  • How to stop accidentally triggering the very behaviors you're trying to eliminate

What You'll Learn

Perspective-Taking and Meaning

The intersection of sensory, cognitive, affect and motor systems

  • The "Set-up": Child's expectation + delayed development = failure
  • Develop appropriate expectations
  • Strategies for triggering triggers
  • De-escalation strategies

Sensory Deficits

Interdependence between sensory processing and perception

  • Choosing strategies based on assessment
  • Interventions to reduce sensory triggers
  • Desensitize strategies to reset the "panic switch"
  • Manage the environment

Language/Learning Deficits

Incorporate language processing into behavior understanding

  • Your emotional response to their challenges
  • Recognize and problem-solve language deficit triggers
  • Social Pragmatics insight
  • Classroom accommodations

Executive Functioning Deficits

Effective supports to overcoming EF roadblocks

  • Problem-solving strategies for organization and working memory
  • Environments that manage fidgeting and inattention
  • Experience how we set kids up to fail

Behavioral Strategies

Empower children to make positive choices

  • Create realistic expectations
  • Successful "resetting" through behavior modification
  • Environmental structures that regulate
  • Reduce tantrums through cognitive restructuring

Problem-Solving Strategies

Teach flexibility, tolerance and decision-making

  • End power struggles and the blame game
  • Improve child's personal responsibility
  • Use language as a self-regulation tool

Brain Training

Increase task completion and emotional control

  • Music and rhythm
  • Brain Gym / Yoga & mindfulness
  • Neurotherapy models
  • Limitations and potential risks

Neuro-Biological Considerations

Supporting regulation through the body

  • Diet/food
  • Supplements/vitamins
  • Sensitivities/toxins
  • Movement and exercise

What You'll Walk Away With

  • A new lens for understanding why challenging behaviors happen - rooted in sensory, language, and executive functioning processing
  • The questions to ask that reveal what a child actually processed versus what you assumed they understood
  • Practical strategies that work with how their brain functions, not against it
  • Less time in crisis mode - because preventing dysregulation beats managing it every time
