Course Description:

Divorce, family breakdown, violence in society and the media, has produced a “shell shocked” generation of kids suffering from anxiety!

Join anxiety expert, Dr. Paul Foxman, who will demonstrate how you can “connect” with anxious children and inspire them to practice new self-regulation skills. You will learn how to help parents (“bulldozers”, “helicopters” and “snowplows”) and schools to gain confidence, gratification and success in helping their most anxious kids.

To increase your effectiveness with the various manifestations of child anxiety, Dr. Foxman will address each of the following disorders with case examples and clinical vignettes:
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders (including skin picking and hair pulling)
  • Social Anxiety Disorder/Selective Mutism
  • Specific phobias
  • Trauma- and Stressor-related disorders

Emphasis will be on creative psychotherapy involving insight-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, biological, mindfulness, and family systems interventions.
Objectives:
  1. Describe how to use the “Three Ingredients” framework to explain how anxiety develops in children and adolescents.
  2. Recognize the role of family, schools, media, and global events in contributing to anxiety.
  3. Apply fun, engaging therapy activities to motivate your clients to change for each anxiety disorder.
  4. Apply a semi-structured child interview tips to develop targeted treatment plans.
  5. Describe four behavioral health recommendations to help all clients.
  6. Identify the pros and cons of prescription drugs and complementary medicine for anxiety.
  7. Identify how to manage ethical risks with families of divorce.
  8. Describe a three-step process for teaching stress management skills to young clients.
  9. Apply group therapy activities to reduce social anxiety.
  10. Identify the “Floating Technique” for panic anxiety.
  11. Demonstrate exposure interventions to treat OCD, separation anxiety, social anxiety and phobias.
  12. Apply anxiety reduction techniques to yourself to be a motivating role model.

PAUL FOXMAN, PH.D.

Paul Foxman, Ph.D., is founder and director of the Center for Anxiety Disorders, a private practice and therapist training center in Burlington, Vermont. He has over 30 years of professional experience in a variety of settings, including hospitals, community mental health centers, graduate schools in psychology and private practice.

Dr. Foxman is the author of Dancing with Fear (2007) and The Worried Child (2004), as well as other publications on the topic of anxiety, including a co-authored casebook, Conquering Panic and Anxiety Disorders (2003).

He received his B.A. degree in psychology from Yale University and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Foxman served his predoctoral internships in the Department of Psychiatry at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco, the Kennedy Child Study Center in Nashville and training seminars at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. In 1985 Dr. Foxman co-founded the Lake Champlain Waldorf School in Shelburne, Vermont, now flourishing from kindergarten through high school.
