Course Description:

Join Marilee Fini, MA, CCC-SLP, and walk away with stuttering interventions that address the “whole person”. Through hands-on demonstrations, case studies, activities and role-play, discover effective techniques to treat the emotional and physical components of stuttering.

When both components of stuttering are addressed and therapy is conducted in “real life” situations – successful and functional outcomes are possible! Marilee’s strategies can be implemented immediately – attend this seminar and your clients will begin to:
  • overcome embarrassment, shame, fear, and anger related to stuttering
  • order in restaurants, make phone calls and give presentations

Walk away with a STUTTERING INTERVENTION TOOLBOX full of assessment and treatment strategies, including:
  • Physical techniques such as decreasing secondary and avoidance behaviors, “easy and relaxed speech”, “easy starts”, “pull-outs” and “freezing the moment”
  • Counseling skills, art activities and role-playing to increase confidence
  • Activities to develop listening and communication skills
  • Strategies to improve eye contact and turn-taking
  • When to make appropriate referrals to mental health providers; especially, if there is a concern of suicide
  • Hands-on activities for counseling skills with parents

Objectives:
  1. Evaluate the physical and emotional components of stuttering in the assessment process.
  2. Develop appropriate goals for the physical and emotional components of stuttering.
  3. Apply techniques for managing and overcoming client’s stress and anxiety in feared speaking situations.
  4. List 4 activities for integrating feelings and emotions in the therapy plan.
  5. Utilize counseling skills to deal with emotions surrounding stuttering.
  6. Implement effective strategies for building communication and listening skills.
  7. Employ practical strategies for working with families in the therapy process.

MARILEE L FINI, M.A., CCC-SLP

Marilee Fini, MA, CCC-SLP, is a practicing speech pathologist for 21 years and has been running her own private practice, MLF Speech Therapy in Cleveland, OH , for the last 15 years. In her practice, she primarily works with children and adults who stutter. Marilee was awarded the “Annie Glenn National Leadership Award – Best Practices in Speech-Language Pathology” given to her by The Ohio State University Department of Speech and Hearing Services in recognition for excellence in leadership in the field of Speech Pathology and dedication to individuals who stutter.

In addition, Marilee serves as an Adjunct Professor at South University and Lakeland College where she teaches public speaking courses. Marilee has been a professional speaker for over 15 years and has traveled across the U.S., presenting to many diverse audiences on stuttering. Marilee sheds a unique light on the subject of stuttering since she has spent most of her life dealing with her own stuttering. Throughout her journey, she has faced many situations which she deemed as “IMPOSSIBLE” but was able to overcome them through hard work, dedication and faith.
