Scientists who study child development have recently found that kids who are "smart but scattered" lack or lag behind in crucial executive skills-the core, brain-based habits of mind required to "execute" tasks like getting organized, staying focused, and controlling emotions. Drawing on this revolutionary discovery, school psychologist Peg Dawson and neuropsychologist Richard Guare have developed an innovative program that parents and teachers can use to strengthen kids' abilities to plan ahead, be efficient, follow through, and get things done. Peg Dawson, EdD, NCSP, is a school psychologist and for over 20 years has worked at the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she specializes in the assessment of children and adults with learning and attention disorders. She is co-author of the best-selling books on executive dysfunction, Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents: 2nd Edition (Guilford, 2010), Smart but Scattered (Guilford, 2009) and Smart but Scattered Teens (Guilford, 2013).
Peg has published numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of topics, including retention, ability grouping, reading disorders, attention disorders, the sleep problems of adolescents, the use of interviews in the assessment process, and homework.
Peg is past president of the New Hampshire Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and the International School Psychology Association. She participated in many of NASP’s leadership initiatives, including the Futures Conference and the development of both the second and third Blueprint for the Training and Practice of School Psychology. She is the 2006 recipient of NASP’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is also the co-author of Coaching the ADHD Adolescent and has published articles and presented at national conferences in the areas of ADHD, Acquired Brain Injury and Executive Dysfunction.
Dr. Guare is the Director of the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and his expertise includes diagnosis and intervention for children and adults with ADHD, LD, Acquired Brain Injury and Autism Spectrum Disorders. He consults with schools, agencies and families and provides direct treatment with children and adults.
Dr. Guare earned his Ph.D in Child Clinical and School Psychology from the University of Virginia and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology at Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He has worked in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, community mental health centers and private and public schools.
